Skill Mismatch among ICT Graduates in Bangladesh: Evidence from a Graduate Survey

Abstract

This article examines reported skill mismatch among ICT-related graduates in Bangladesh using a cleaned graduate survey of 400 respondents. The study treats mismatch not simply as unemployment or individual deficiency, but as a transition problem in converting academic ICT learning into practical, employer-recognised capability. Descriptive statistics, bivariate association tests, and binary logistic regression with robust standard errors are used. The descriptive evidence shows that 82.5 percent of respondents were classified as experiencing skill mismatch, while 40.5 percent were employed. Training after graduation and academic-period work experience are associated with lower mismatch rates in bivariate analysis, but they are not statistically significant in the full complete-case logit model. Years since passing is negatively associated with mismatch, suggesting labour-market adjustment over time. Job-market knowledge is positively associated with reported mismatch, indicating that awareness of employer expectations may increase recognition of skill gaps rather than directly create mismatch. The findings should be interpreted as associational because the data are cross-sectional and based on survey classification. The article recommends stronger project-based learning, structured internships, portfolio evidence, graduate tracking, and employer engagement in ICT curricula and training.
