Abstract
The abstract of the article. Data integrity and product traceability are essential for ensuring authenticity, transparency, and accountability in organic supply chains. Blockchain technology has increasingly been proposed as a promising solution for strengthening trust through decentralized ledgers, smart contracts, and tamper-evident audit trails. This study maps the current trends, thematic focus areas, and research gaps in blockchain traceability for organic agriculture through a PRISMA 2020-guided systematic literature review. A corpus of 31 peer-reviewed journal articles and conference papers was analyzed using thematic synthesis and bibliometric mapping with VOSviewer. The findings indicate a marked increase in publications after 2020, with research largely centered on permissioned consortium architectures that seek to balance transparency, privacy, and performance through smart contracts, IoT integration, and hybrid on-chain/off-chain storage models. The existing literature is dominated by technical proofs of concept and small-scale prototype studies, with most applications focusing on upstream and midstream supply chain activities and key agricultural commodities. Significant gaps remain in end-to-end data standardization, interoperability, and the reliability of data capture systems in low-connectivity rural settings. The review highlights the need for future research on interoperable frameworks, privacy-preserving and scalable system designs, human-centered solutions for low-literacy users, and stronger alignment between digital traceability systems and regulatory or certification requirements. Overall, this study provides a clearer understanding of current developments and offers future directions for advancing blockchain traceability in organic agriculture.
