Abstract

Rock climbing has emerged as a technically demanding adventure sport globally, and Mongolia possesses diverse geomorphological landscapes with considerable potential for adventure tourism development. However, the country lacks a systematic national-level assessment framework for identifying and classifying rock resources suitable for climbing-based tourism. This study aims to identify and evaluate the natural resource potential for rock climbing and adventure tourism development in Mongolia. A mixed-methods approach was employed, incorporating natural resource identification, document-based content analysis, expert judgment, reliability testing, factor analysis, and geographic analysis. Expert agreement was assessed using ICC, Kendall’s W, Fleiss’ Kappa, and Cronbach’s Alpha, with results indicating substantial consensus (α = 0.817). Data processing and model estimation were conducted using Microsoft Excel and SPSS version 23. The results revealed that 61 rock formations across Mongolia possess development potential, evaluated based on rock height, width, slope, rock quality, climbable surface area, and prominence. Regional lithological diversity indicates that granite formations in central and Gobi regions are suitable for mass tourism, whereas marble and shale formations in western and northern regions are appropriate for specialist climbers. Seven adventure tourism types were identified as most suitable for development. The study provides a foundational framework for sustainable adventure tourism planning and policy development in Mongolia.
