Abstract

Organizations around the world are taking more action by adapting to and mitigating climate change. But the inertia and apathy of organizations is still a key impediment to a successful shift towards a low-polluting and climate-resilient economy. This study is designed to investigate the status of organizational responses to climate change in Bangladesh, keeping in view of 15 factors associated with organizational response to climate change. Content analysis method was used in the study, where the annual reports of 262 companies from15 different sectors listed on the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) were analyzed to evaluate the climate change response of the organizations for each of the fifteen factors identified and to compare the level of climate change response across sectors. The results indicate that the organizations’ climate change actions in Bangladesh are in the relatively nascent stage. While some organizations have started work on climate-change related topics, many still see climate-change responses yet another form of corporate social responsibility (CSR) and not as part of the organization’s strategy or risk management. Financial institutions, especially banks, have robust responses to climate change among the 15 sectors analyzed. The answers to most other sectors, by contrast, are much weaker and still disappointing, suggesting significant under-preparedness and lack of interest or action among companies in addressing climate-related issues. The results will give guidance to policymakers, regulatory institutions, business organizations, industry associations, NGOs, voluntary organizations and academia to evaluate the status of corporate response to climate change in Bangladesh.
