Abstract
This study examined the relationship between organisational agility and the competitiveness of deposit money banks in Delta State, Nigeria, and the moderating role of digital transformation. Organisational agility was operationalised through responsiveness and flexibility, competitiveness served as the criterion construct, and digital transformation entered the model as a moderator. Anchored in the Dynamic Capabilities Theory and the Contingency Theory, the study addressed a gap in the Nigerian banking literature, where agility has typically been bundled and modelled against performance or survival rather than competitiveness. A cross-sectional survey design was adopted. From 259 middle- and top-level managers of the five systemically important banks known as FUGAZ, a sample of 152 was determined using the Krejcie and Morgan table, and 140 usable responses were analysed. Data were gathered with a structured questionnaire and analysed using Partial Least Squares-Structural Equation Modelling in SmartPLS 4.1.1.9, with hypotheses tested at the 0.05 level. The measurement model satisfied all reliability and validity criteria and the study revealed that flexibility has a strong, positive and significant relationship with competitiveness. However, responsiveness has a weak, positive but non-significant relationship with competitiveness, and digital transformation did not significantly moderate the agility-competitiveness relationship. The model explained 76.3 per cent of the variance in competitiveness. The study concluded that competitiveness is secured mainly through the reconfiguring capacity embodied in flexibility rather than reaction speed, and that digital transformation functions more as a builder of agility than a moderator. It was recommended that the executive management and boards of deposit money banks should treat flexibility as a strategic priority and invest in the routines that sustain it so as to convert adaptive capacity into defensible competitiveness.
