Abstract

Water is a universal tangible element which also holds a spiritual and cultural concept for human civilization. Water-related facilities for consumption, irrigation, cultural, social, and religious acts show how important water is to humans. People have constructed edifices based on climatic factors such as precipitation, snowmelt, river discharge, and surface and underground water supply. Bangladesh’s river and deltaic formations make its water culture worth studying. Some religious and cultural monuments that involved human interaction with water are now UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Additionally, there are lots of water sources like (ponds, lakes) that were purposefully created from the beginning of those historic structures hundred years ago are still in use now. The historical relevance of those water heritages is sometimes overlooked, even though they coexist in many architectural or monumental structures. Numerous studies have been found about the cultural heritage and religious buildings of this area, but still there exists a significant gap in study regarding the water related architecture and water management of the previous time. Therefore, this research will attempt to identify such water heritage locations from the tentative list of UNESCO and studied it by case study analysis. The paper aims to deliver an in-depth examination of the historical context and importance of water heritages in Bangladesh, focusing on three specific types primarily sourced from (WRCHA). Furthermore, the outcome of this article will be to raise awareness of the need for these sites proper management and provide a fresh viewpoint on water heritage.
