Abstract
The Bangladesh handloom industry is an important element of rural employment, Bangladesh cultural heritage and economic sustainability. Although it is historically significant, the sector has been on a downslope trend more especially in the big weaving centers like the Sirajganj district. This paper will set out to determine and discuss the major factors that caused the handloom destruction in Sirajganj, Bangladesh. With the help of a quantitative research method, primary data were gathered regarding 200 handloom owners by administering them a structured questionnaire on the basis of a five-point Likert scale. The stratified random sampling was also utilized to cover major handloom clusters in a representative manner. The SPSS software was used to produce descriptive statistics, correlation, reliability test, and multiple regression analysis. According to the findings, high production cost ranks as the most important factor that destroys the industry with the scarcity of skilled labor coming next and seasonal demands, the unavailability of modern technology and unavailability of raw materials. From the empirical results, it can be seen that the proposed model has a moderate level of explanation of the dependent variable (R2 = 0.300). The results also illustrate that the inclusive model is statistically significant (p< 0.05), representing that the variables involved in the model greatly influence the failure of the handloom business. The conclusions can be of great use to policy-makers, development agencies and industry stakeholders, who have to develop specific interventions that can help to rejuvenate and sustain such economically and culturally valuable industry.
Keywords: High Production Cost, Scarcity of skilled labor, Seasonal Demand, Limited access of modern Technology, Lack of raw Materials, Handloom Industry.
